How to Bring Peace and Simplicity to the Back to School Season

EPIC MOM FAILURE

Every year I promised myself that I would have it together to start the school year.  And almost every single year, summer slowly faded and the start of the school year smacked me right in the face like the cold water from a squirt gun in my 8-year-old’s hand.

One year I didn’t even get a picture of my crew until we were in the bathroom at Walmart AFTER SCHOOL that day. {funny, not funny}

It felt like an epic mom failure until I posted it and so many women were like, “me too!”.  We kind of laughed together because what else can you do? Besides giving myself grace, I learned a few valuable lessons that year.

1.| I NEEDED TO GET IT TOGETHER.

While I don’t feel the need to parade my crew on Facebook or Instagram with first-day photos, this picture represented the disorganized jumble of overwhelm that was happening everywhere in my life.

2.| I NEEDED TO SIMPLIFY

I was losing precious moments of peace with my children because I was running at breakneck speed playing “catch up” and “clean up” and trying to do too many things.  Which meant I was doing things mediocre at best and excelling at nothing.

It was time for me to obey the Creator’s prompting to simplify my life.  I needed to determine was hindering me, what was entangling me.  I needed to set Spirit-led priorities and run a Hebrews 12 race so that I could fix my eyes on Jesus and live as God’s handiwork (Ephesians 2:10).

3.| I WAS NOT ALONE.

I heard from so many mommas that wanted to start the school year off right.  We tried. Bless our hearts, we had great intentions. But, we somehow missed a few things that were essential to nailing this transition.

Like me, they want to be prepared, organized, and full of the peaceful Holy Spirit instead of feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and exhausted.

4.| I NEEDED A GAME PLAN.

As a teacher, I would never walk into a classroom without a plan. I know how to reverse engineer goals + objectives to get my students to the end result.   So, why was I living my life in this haphazard struggle? Talk about a reality check.

I needed A GUIDE + A CHECKLIST + A LOT OF PRAYER + A MINDSET SHIFT to create an easy transition from summer to school.  It was time to get to work. If I’ve learned anything in my life it’s this:

Strong women = Strong Families

+

Organized + Peaceful Moms = Organized + Peaceful Families

THE GAME PLAN

I’ve talked about a powerful mindset shift that happens when we “unlabel” ourselves from the Enemy’s lies.

To change our lives, we must change our thinking patterns. (Think Romans 12:1-2 and Philippians 4:8.)  So, this mindset shift is where I started.

I claimed 2 Timothy 1:7.  (For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.)  By knowing this, I could claim that I am not afraid of a challenge and change.  The Holy Spirit guides me with power and love.  I could claim that my thoughts are organized.  I can simplify.  I think clearly.   This was the first step in “getting it together”.

Once I had the mindset shift, I spent time in prayer and reflection about what we actually needed to do. I started writing it all out on paper.   I pulled together Scripture to remind me of God’s promises for us in this time.

Prayer over our home + scriptures to speak life into our family can make amazing things happen in our lives.

Then, I got to work.  I created checklists for what we needed to do, which turned into a full guide of how to help mommas simplify with the “Back to School Basics”.  Talk about letting the Lord lead you into something amazing!

In this guide, I put together a prayer and Scriptures for our families to help bring peace into our mindsets, strategies to simplify, and checklists, guides, and tips to help us start the school year strong this year.

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A “LAZY DAYS TO CRAZY DAYS” TRANSITION

There are a LOT of things we can do to help our family peacefully transition from summer to school.  The first step is to simplify and actually determine what your family actually needs to do.  *I put guidepost questions in the workbook for you.

I wanted to share a few points from my checklists to act as “guideposts” for you here.  These should help simplify the back to school tasks.  I want you to start this school year as an awesome and organized momma that’s full of a peaceful spirit to help your crew this year!

This transition is smooth if you slow down + see your family + create what YOU NEED.  I also divided these checklists into 3 parts: Summer, Almost Go-Time, and Crunch Time to help you create a smooth and steady flow during the countdown.  NOTE: *There’s a LOT more than these in the Back to School Basics Workbook.

SUMMER MONTHS

  • Schedule Doctor’s appointments, Eye Exams, + Dental Cleanings
  • Schedule haircuts for the week before school (Don’t wait until that week.  Do it now.)
  • Set aside time to purge clothes + old lunch boxes + school supplies.
  • Schedule a day to take these “unwanted” items to donation.
  • Create a budget + savings plan for shopping + school expenses.
  • Implement a chore chart.

ALMOST GO-TIME

  • School Shopping: Starter Items to include clothing + supplies ordered or bought
  • Create expectations for the year for everybody in the family.
  • Plan the menu (1-2 weeks). Create a grocery list for this.  Buy groceries.
  • Clean out your car.
  • Continue to move sleep + rise times closer to their school norm.
  • Set up “command center” + system for organizing paperwork.

CRUNCH TIME

  • Written out your meal plan + prepped food for breakfasts, lunches, dinners.
  • Move sleep + rise times to their school norm.
  • Discuss + Revisit expectations for the school year.
  • Put a few extra “trash” bags in your car to help it stay clean.
  • Pray with your children over their school year.
  • Practice your own morning rhythms before the actual start of school.

MORE TOOLS FOR YOU

If you’re looking for more than just this checklist to get it together, sister, then I’ve got you covered.

Since I was creating a game plan for myself I had to share it with other mommas who needed this tool too.  After a LOT of prayer over you, I put together a simple guide to help you simplify this transition with Spirit-led strategies.

MORE HELPFUL TOOLS

Sister, if you’re looking for more tips on how to simplify your life with a Spirit-led approach, I’ve got you covered!   When it comes to organizing our homes and our kitchens, I’ve got 2 awesome resources to help you!

1.| SIMPLIFY IN THE SPIRIT

Three of my favorite tools to simplify how + when to dig into the Word.  Resting at the feet of Jesus like Mary can be challenging to our Martha hearts.  When I implemented using these three tools, my life transformed.

They are free as a gift from my toolbox to yours.

2.| SIMPLIFY YOUR SPACE

I created an action-packed download to help you create momentum to simplify your space and get you results.  I’m sharing what I’ve learned through years of moving (thanks, Army) reading, trial and error, and listening to the “experts” to craft a single document so that you can put your energy + effort where it needs to go:  YOUR SPACE.

I share my story here in The Beautiful Truth Behind Simplifying My Space because this part of the journey can be super challenging!

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed with life right now, know that you are NOT ALONE.  I know when I first began listening to this calling the Lord place on me, I was a little overwhelmed as to where to start.  As I’ve worked through this process, I’ve created tools to help women simplify their lives with a Spirit-led approach.

I WANT TO SHARE THE STEPS I TOOK TO GET STARTED:

In each of these blog posts, I share the parts of my journey in which I followed the lead of the Creator as He guided me to simplify my life.

1.|Sitting at the feet of Jesus to claim my identity as a Daughter of the King.

2.|Setting fierce boundaries around Christ-centered priorities.

3.|Reclaiming my mornings + creating a morning power hour to fill my cup.

4.| Getting my home together with rhythms + routines.
