Godly Affirmations Living a Dauntless Life

Hebrews 12:1-3

Running with a Reckless Abandonment to Get to Jesus

One of my goals this year (2018) has been to be more present and more intentional with my time with my Creator, time for myself, time for play and silliness with my family.  I struggled to feel peace and joy in my life for years as I had fallen culprit to many of the lies and labels the Enemy had placed upon me.  You can read more about how I’m encouraging others to become unlabeled with me HERE.

For the past year, I’ve felt the Lord pressing upon my heart to eliminate distractions, to eliminate clutter, to develop intentional mornings and habits and routines that bring me closer to Him.  I’ve started sharing these tools with you and can’t wait to reveal what He’s whispered to me to bring you this next year!

In the past few months, I’ve realized that I truly want less of what the world offers and more of what God has planned for me, I want more of what He has planned for you too!

I’ve been reflecting on next year’s goals and how to share the Lord’s whispers with you. I want to spur my sisters in Christ forward to run with reckless abandonment to get to Jesus.  Hebrews 12:1-3 keep returning to me over and over.  (By the way, I have a FREE STUDY for this passage at the bottom! )

Sister, I want you to read with me for a moment this passage:

Hebrews 12:1-3

1.) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  2.) Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  3.)Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Setting the Pace for the New Year

Giant Slayer, many people choose a word for the year.  I have done this in the past.  But, what if God’s mission for us is bigger than just one word?  What if to become unlabeled by the world, we need a mission statement instead? Perhaps this is the very reason the Lord has affirmed to me that Hebrews 12:1-3 will set the pace for me for this next year!  Maybe He’s pressing this upon you too?

I want to share with you what the Lord has whispered to me in the quiet moments as I’ve reflected upon this passage of scripture. I’ve done a bit Bible journaling over this, spent hours in prayer and meditation and created you a free download to work through parts of Hebrews 12 with me.  I’m ready to plant some mustard seed faith to move mountains and slay Giants.  If you are as well, I encourage you to continue reading and share this post.

A Great Cloud of Witnesses

Before we dig into Hebrews 12, have you read about this “Great Cloud of Witnesses” from Hebrews 11?  I have heard Hebrews 11 is called the “Faith Hall of Fame” or “Faith Giants” chapter in the Bible.  The transition word “therefore” at the beginning of Hebrews 12 means this, “look at what was before to understand fully what’s coming next.”

In the study sheet, I’m giving you with this, I challenge you to read Hebrews 11 and connect it with the Old Testament story of one of these faith giants to encourage you in this spiritual race.  They are waiting at the finish line alongside Jesus cheering for you!

Throw off Everything that Hinders and the Sin that So Easily Entangles

How do we run with reckless abandonment to get to Jesus?  Giant Slayer, have you ever tried to walk around with your shoelaces tied together?  Go ahead and laugh at that image.  While it’s a bit silly, it’s a perfect word picture to help us envision what small strings can do to hinder our walk.

I want to ask you a few questions that might just pierce your spirit.  I know that when I wrote these questions while journaling about God’s words here, they pierced my spirit.  A sure sign that we’re on the way to Spiritual growth, right?

  1. What hinders me?
  2. What (secret) sins entangle me?
  3. How do I eliminate these from my life?
  4. How do I fix my eyes on Jesus?
  5. What do I do when I grow weary?

“Everything that Hinders”

What was hindering me?  What was holding me back from spiritual breakthroughs in my life? How was the Enemy binding me and holding me hostage with his lies and labels?  These questions kept echoing in my mind! How could I fix my eyes on Jesus to bring about freedom in my life?  Here’s how I began to experience the beginnings of a spiritual breakthrough.

Over the past year, I’ve felt a pressing from the Lord to declutter and purge our home.  I wasn’t sure where to start or why this was pressed upon me except I knew I never felt peaceful, but restless and anxious in our home.  After prayer and meditation about how to create a home of peace, I created a chore chart because we needed spoken expectations and a simple routine.  After we established this, my mind felt the freedom to begin this decluttering process that the Lord was calling me to.

As I waged war with my “stuff” I began to see the secret sins that were hindering and entangling me.  Oh, Giant Slayer! This has been a tough process to realize that my hindrance comes in the form of a spirit of lack and distrust.  It comes in the form of stinginess and longing for worldly blessings instead of leaning and trusting on God.

I learned this: secret sins like to hide in the places we least expect and if we want to run with reckless abandonment into the arms of Jesus, we will have to reveal the essence of who we are and what is truly hindering us.

You can read all about that and grab a free download to simplify your space {HERE}.

Fix Our Eyes on Jesus

As we run this race with perseverance, let us fix our eyes on Jesus…  Can I tell you as I’ve worked to uncover the secret sins and stuff that’s entangling me, I’m working to fix my eyes on the Creator and the blessings He provides.  When I consider Christ and how he scorned the shame of the cross, I am reminded that through the Enemy’s attacks, God is glorified when I keep my eyes on him.

How will I persevere?  How will I trust?  How will I proclaim His glory and blessings and remain faithful when I feel like I’m in the middle of an Enemy-designed obstacle course to knock me off track?!  BY FIXING MY EYES ON JESUS.

That may sound cliche, but let me give you what “Fix Your Eyes On Jesus” looks like in real time.

  • I focus on God’s grace and abundance when my heart feels like I should hold on tight to mediocrity because it’s safe.
  • I focus on His glory when I feel ashamed.
  • I focus on His praise and blessings when the Enemy presses in for an attack.
  • I focus on offering gratitude and giving when the world says there is a lack in my life.
  • I focus on Jesus.  Even when it’s difficult.

And friend, let me get a little more real with you: The Enemy is seeking to devour you in this race.  He is relentless.  He is waging spiritual warfare against your mind so that you focus on every obstacle in your way.  He will even give you easy excuses and simple labels to blind you so that the Author and Perfector of your faith seems miles away.

So that You Will Not Grow Weary and Lose Heart

Oh friend!  How I love the last part of this verse!  I’ve seen how growing weary and losing heart causes so many to give up or to quit. We lost hope for the finish line.  We see the Enemy’s obstacles and have become blinded to God’s power and endurance to finish.

Giant Slayer, I challenge you to refocus on the true Giver of Life and His sustaining power.  In the free printable I’m giving, I ask you to create a plan to find a quiet time with the Creator to allow Him to fill you up and sustain you.  When will you do this?  What will you read?  How will you dig into His Word to restore you so that you can finish strong?

When we run with reckless abandonment into the arms of Jesus, he will uncover what has been hidden with His true light. I pray that this free download I’m giving you today helps you do throw off what hinders you so that you run freely.  I pray that I might encourage you and cheer for you as you run your race.
